Barriers
to libraries as agents of lifelong learning
The research
was conducted in 1999 to check the assumption that some
students in Further and Higher Education experience barriers to
accessing
Libraries as agents of Lifelong Learning. 422 students in Further
Education and 518 in Higher Education completed questionnaires about
their
use of Libraries, Public and Academic; of these 31 also took part
in
in-depth interviews. Some relationships were found between the degree
of
their perceived barriers and variables such as: gender, Social Class,
ethnic origin, previous occupation, previous experience of Library
use and
access to a PC in the home. Other issues raised included students'
perceptions of insufficiency in the provision of textbooks, IT workstations
and staffing levels.
