The AGM started at 4.00 pm.

1. Apologies

Apologies were received from Linda Banwell, Monica Blake, Noeleen Cookman, Ros Cotton, Liz Hart, David Haynes, Clare Nankivell, Carolynn Rankin, Judy Palmer, Sacha Shaw, & Dorothy Williams

2. Minutes of the last meeting

The minutes of the previous AGM were accepted as a true record

3. Matters Arising

There were no matters arising

4. Committee Membership

Five nominations have been received for this year's LIRG Committee. There were six members of the LIRG Committee who had completed their term of office, but who were eligible to seek re-election. An election was therefore not required. The five nominations received were from:

Juliet Eve, Manchester Metropolitan University Biddy Fisher, Sheffield Hallam University Clare Nankivell, University of Central England Carolynn Rankin, Leeds Metropolitan University Maurice Wakeham, Anglia Polytechnic University

Three members of the former committee did not seek re-election: Colette Coles, Dorothy Williams, and Steve Morgan. Steve, however, will continue to serve on the LIRG Committee as a co-opted member. Colette and Dorothy were thanked for their work on behalf of the Committee.

Liz Hart standing down as Secretary, thanked for contribution - Pat Gannon-Leary taking over. Noeleen Cookman has taken on the administration of awards and prizes.

Current co-options to committee were all formalised.

5. Chair's report

Chair presented his report. Full report will appear in LIRN but points included:

  • Committee met three times
  • Much work done via small groups or e-mail
  • Gratitude expressed to John Sumsion for LIRN published three times p.a.
  • Mailbase list members increasing * Web pages being redesigned
  • 1998/99 busy, 1999/2000 quieter
  • Issues with regard to income generation a priority for future
  • Research Methods course to be run again early next year
  • Special module relating to health being investigated
  • Jo Horsfall continues to maintain membership and LIRN subscriber databases
  • Need to consider sort of relationship that LIRG should have with new professional body

6. Treasurer's report

Attention drawn to some figures:

  • Impact of running Research Methods seminars
  • Decrease in institutional subscriptions
  • Increase in personal subscriptions

Thanks were expressed to organisations allowing Committee members to charge expenses to staff training and development budgets

The auditors were thanked for their work.

7. Any Other Business

There was no further business and the meeting closed at 4.15pm.
